The O’Crowley Clan Council has agreed to appoint Sept-Chieftains, and that the appointment of these Chieftains will be for a period of ten years. The selected individuals have demonstrated and formulated a strong commitment to the clan’s future. After ten years, the appointment of these Sept-Chieftains may be transformed to being ‘for life’, depending on the Clan Council decision at that future time.
At the end of the 16th century, the O’Crowley Clan had nine (9) known and historically recorded designations, the product of growth and settlements within and outside the original O’Crowley lordship of Kilshallow, the clan’s sole habitat being in Carbery and South Muskerry; serving The MacCarthy Reagh and its sundry septs, plus The MacCarthy Muskerry.
The O’Crowley Clan, just like all other Irish clans, had several septs, or branches, each with a particular designation; being a result of families stemming from the main clan line over the course of population growth and expansion. For example, the MacCarthys in Carbery had no less than twelve (12) Septs, and the O’Mahonys eight (8). The Sept-Chieftains were subordinate to the Clan Chief.
