Spelling variations (which include an initial \u201c\u00d3\u201d or omit it) include Donoghue, Donaghoe, Donoughe, Donaho,\u00a0Donahoe,\u00a0Donough,\u00a0Donahue, Donahow, Doneghoe, Donehue, Donighue, Donihue, Donoho,\u00a0Donohoe, Donahugh, Donohough, Donohow, Donohue, Donaughue, Donaghie, Donaghy, Doughue, Dougue, Donihoo and many more.<br>\u00a0<br>The chief non-MacCarthy Gaelic princes under the MacCarthy M\u00f3rs in Desmond were the\u00a0O&#8217;Sullivans:\u00a0 after them were the\u00a0<strong>O&#8217;Donoghues<\/strong>, and these two were the only clans who took part in the performance of the MacCarthy inauguration ceremonies \u2013 i.e., the bestowal of the\u00a0<strong>White Wand<\/strong>.\u00a0<br>\u00a0<br>The\u00a0<strong>White Rod<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>White Wand<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Rod of Inauguration<\/strong>, or\u00a0<strong>Wand of Sovereignty<\/strong>, in the\u00a0Gaelic language\u00a0variously called the\u00a0<strong>slat na r\u00edghe<\/strong>\u00a0(rod of kingship) and\u00a0<strong>slat tighearnais<\/strong>\u00a0(rod of lordship), was the primary symbol of a\u00a0Gaelic\u00a0king or lord\u2019s legitimate authority and the principal prop used in his inauguration ceremony.\u00a0First documented in the 12th century\u00a0<em>Life of M\u00e1ed\u00f3c of Ferns<\/em>, but assumed to have been used long before then,\u00a0it is last documented in Ireland in the early 17th century. While the reception of the rod was in origin a Gaelic cultural feature, following the\u00a0Norman invasion of Ireland\u00a0some foreign families became significantly\u00a0Gaelicised.\u00a0A notable\u00a0Anglo-Norman\u00a0example were the great\u00a0De Burgh\u00a0magnates styled\u00a0Mac William \u00cdochtar, who had become completely Gaelicised and received the White Rod.<br><br>There are several completely different O&#8217;Donoghue families in Ireland:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>The \u00d3 Donnchadha of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cashel,_County_Tipperary\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cashel,_County_Tipperary\">Cashel<\/a>, from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E\u00f3ganacht_Chaisil\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E\u00f3ganacht_Chaisil\">E\u00f3ganacht Chaisil<\/a>, related to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/O%27Sullivan\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/O%27Sullivan\">O&#8217;Sullivans<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MacCarthy_Mor_dynasty\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/MacCarthy_Mor_dynasty\">MacCarthys<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/O%27Callaghan\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/O%27Callaghan\">O&#8217;Callaghans<\/a>. They descend from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donnchad_mac_Cellach\u00e1in\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donnchad_mac_Cellach\u00e1in\">Donnchad mac Cellach\u00e1in<\/a>, King of Munster.<\/li><li>The\u00a0\u00d3 Donnchadha of Desmond, from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E\u00f3ganacht_Raithlind\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/E\u00f3ganacht_Raithlind\">E\u00f3ganacht Raithlind<\/a>, related to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/O%27Mahony\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/O%27Mahony\">O&#8217;Mahonys<\/a>, prominent in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/County_Kerry\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/County_Kerry\">County Kerry<\/a>\u00a0and referred to as &#8220;O&#8217;Donoghue M\u00f3r.&#8221; They descend from Donnchadh mac Domhnall.<\/li><li>The \u00d3 Donnchadha of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Osraige\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Osraige\">Osraige<\/a>, from the Clann Conla, related to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mac_Giolla_Ph\u00e1draig_dynasty\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mac_Giolla_Ph\u00e1draig_dynasty\">Mac Giolla Ph\u00e1draig dynasty<\/a>\u00a0(&#8220;the Fitzpatricks&#8221;) and produced some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kings_of_Osraige\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kings_of_Osraige\">kings of Osraige<\/a>, prominent in\u00a0County Kilkenny\u00a0and commonly anglicised as\u00a0Dunphy.
